Paperboard<\/a> is a thick paper-based material. While there is no rigid differentiation between paper and paperboard<\/a>, paperboard is generally thicker (usually over 0.30 mm, 0.012 in, or 12 points) than paper and has certain superior attributes such as foldability and rigidity. According to ISO standards, paperboard is a paper with a grammage above 250 gsm, but there are exceptions. Paperboard<\/a> can be single- or multi-ply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it is referred to as cardboard, which is a generic, lay term used to refer to any heavy paper pulp\u2013based board, however, this usage is deprecated in the paper, printing, and packaging industries as it does not adequately describe each product type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The terminology and classifications of paperboards are not always uniform. Differences occur depending on specific industry, locale, and personal choice. In general, the paper board<\/a> which is often used in bookbinding for making hardcovers, is called Binder’s board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paperboard is the most recycled material in the EU, with an 83% recycling rate, from its raw material and manufacturing all the way to recycling and end-of-life, paperboard<\/a> delivers a wealth of environmental and technical advantages. It’s also widely used in the hardcover book binding area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hardcover book,<\/span> also known as hardbound<\/a>, and sometimes as casebound book<\/a>, is one bound with rigid protective covers (typically of binder’s board or heavy paperboard covered with buckram or other cloth, heavy paper, or occasionally leather). It has a flexible, sewn spine which allows the book to lie flat on a surface when opened. Modern hardcovers may have the pages glued onto the spine in much the same way as paperbacks.<\/p>\n\n\n
