What is Book Edging?

Book edging is a traditional craft, also known as edge decoration, and has been a long-established book finishing method. It became popular in the 16th Century to beautify the look of books when libraries started to index books using their spines and books stood on their ends.

Technical Process of Book Edging

Book edging involves applying a decorative finish to the edges of a book’s pages. It requires both machinery and hand finishing and demands precision and expertise to achieve the desired results.

Preparation

Before edging, the book block is prepared by clamping the pages together securely to ensure uniformity during the edging process.

Trimming

The edges of the book block may be trimmed to create a smooth, even surface for edging.

Edging Technique

Various edging techniques are employed depending on the desired effect, such as gilt edging, deckled edging, and printed edges using ink jet spray.

Application

The selected edging technique is applied to the exposed edges of the book block, either manually or using specialized machinery.
